Ford Transit Key Fob Not Working? (Blue Key & Transit Custom) – The “Sealed Battery” Flaw Explained

Ford Transit Key Fob Not Working? You Are Not Alone.

If you own a Ford Transit, you might be familiar with the frustration of pressing the unlock button and… nothing happens.

Whether you have the older “Blue Head” key (Mk7) or the newer “Flip” key (Transit Custom), the problem is often exactly the same. Your van isn’t broken—your key is designed to fail.

At Key Trouble, we fix this issue daily across Manchester and Cheshire. Here is everything you need to know about why your key died and how to fix it without paying main dealer prices.

The Problem: The "Self-Charging" Myth

Between 2006 and 2016, Ford used a “sealed unit” design for their van keys.

  • Transit Mk7 (2006–2014): The solid blue/black key.

  • Transit Custom (2012–2016): The rounded “flip” style key.

These keys were designed to be waterproof and “maintenance-free.” Inside the sealed plastic case is a rechargeable battery (usually a Panasonic VL2330 or VL2020) that charges wirelessly while the key is in the ignition.

The Flaw: Just like a mobile phone battery, these rechargeable cells eventually degrade. After 10 years of use, they simply stop holding a charge. Because the key is sealed shut, you cannot open it to change the battery.

When the battery dies, Ford expects you to throw the whole key in the bin and buy a new one.

"My Transit Custom Key (2013/14/15) Has Stopped Locking"

Many owners of the newer Transit Custom are surprised when this happens. You might think, “Surely they fixed this after the old blue key?”

Unfortunately not. The early Transit Custom flip keys suffer from the exact same issue. The battery is soldered to the circuit board. If your buttons have stopped working but the van still starts, your rechargeable battery is likely dead.

(Note: Newer Customs from late 2016 onwards finally switched to a standard replaceable battery, but thousands of vans on the road still use the flawed sealed type.)

The Dealer Solution vs. The Key Trouble Solution

If you go to a main dealer, they will ask for the vehicle to be towed to them and you will have to wait for a new key to be ordered and programmed to your vehicle which can take 5 – 10 working days.

We offer a better, faster fix.

When you see cheap Ford keys for sale online, they are often low-quality aftermarket copies. These frequently suffer from weak signals, buttons that collapse after a few months, and poor battery life.

At Key Trouble, we believe the best fix is the one that lasts. That is why we supply Ford OEM keys for your Transit or Custom.

  • Official Ford Quality: We supply the exact high-quality, waterproof sealed unit that your van was designed to use.

  • Longevity: Your original key likely lasted over a decade before the battery failed. A brand-new Genuine Ford key offers that same 10-15 year lifespan, giving you total peace of mind.

  • Reliability: No “range anxiety” or programming drop-outs. Just a solid key that works every time you press the button.

  • Same Day Service: Unlike the dealer who makes you wait 5 days for a genuine key, we carry them in stock. We come to you (home, work, or roadside) and cut & program it immediately.

Fequently Asked Questions

Can I cut the key open and solder a new battery myself?

ou can try, but we don’t recommend it. The cases are heat-sealed. cutting them open often damages the delicate circuit board inside. Plus, soldering a new battery requires precision skills—get it too hot, and you’ll fry the chip.

The “Remote” (locking) and the “Immobiliser” (starting) are two separate systems inside the key. The immobiliser chip works passively without a battery. This is why you can still drive to work, even if you have to lock the doors manually with the blade!

We are typically 40-50% cheaper than the main dealer. plus, we save you the cost of a tow truck or the hassle of dropping your van off for the day.
